Tronox Mineral Sands Helps Get Water to South African Homes

November 19 marked the official opening of the bulk water infrastructure upgrade project.

Tronox Mineral Sands hosted the official opening of the Koekenaap Bulk Water Infrastructure Upgrade Project on November 19, 2019, in collaboration with the Matzikama Municipality.

This project was driven by the demand for water for household usage, and identified by the Municipality as a strategic project for the area. Tronox Mineral Sands agreed to partner with the Municipality to deliver a bulk water infrastructure project that could address the desperate need for water.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and Matzikama Municipality approved this project as part of Tronox’s Social and Labor Plan 2018 – 2022. Construction on the facility started in March of this year and was completed in August. The upgrade comprises of a new five mega-liter raw water dam, new pump station and piping.

“Tronox Mineral Sands invested in this project because corporate citizenship is an integral part of our global business,” said Stanley Boloko, stakeholder relations specialist, communities and corporate affairs, in an interview on a local radio station (listen below). “We strongly believe that we should play a leadership role in improving the quality of life in the communities where we operate and we are continually challenging ourselves to promote sustainable growth, invest in green technologies, and be transparent in all our business operations. We believe that these efforts promote the long-term interests of all our stakeholders, including employees, customers, business partners, investors, local communities, government, and the mining and minerals industries at large.”

The recently created raw water dam will provide water to homes in and around Koekenaap.
