Earth Day 2020 – Sustainability Announcement

At Tronox, our values state that “we have an uncompromising focus on operating safe, reliable and responsible facilities,” and we take our commitment to be good stewards of the environment very seriously. We have combined two companies with a legacy of responsible operations and products that brighten and help clean our world. We understand that this legacy extends beyond the minerals we extract or the pigment we manufacture. When it comes to managing our environmental impact, we begin with the end in mind. We implement innovative technologies and practices at our operating sites to protect our land, water, air and ecosystems, then rehabilitate our land to preserve the earth’s scarce resources for the future – because we only have one planet.

Today marks the 50^th anniversary of Earth Day, an international event that serves as a platform for transformative actions to save our planet. As is the case across many aspects of how we do business during a global pandemic, the approach to how we honor Earth Day this year is different. Volunteer days are on hold. Science forums with local students have been postponed. But at Tronox, we know our value to operate responsibly is not captured in one day. It is in the DNA of who we are. We are one Tronox – with global responsibility led by local actions. This is why we strive to set an example of accountability in our approach to environmental stewardship, with proactive global initiatives in the following areas:

–        Energy – It takes considerable energy to produce high-quality mineral sands and TiO₂ product. Energy availability issues have a direct impact on our operational efficiency. We are actively working to manage our energy demand and mitigate our impact on the environment and on the climate from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

–        Water – Fresh water is not an infinite resource, but it is essential in our operations. To manage water more sustainably, we have a “fit-for-purpose” approach that enables us to match the quality of water to the process, like using seawater instead of fresh water. We also employ multiple water reuse and recycling systems, so scarce fresh water can be allocated as efficiently as possible.

–        Biodiversity – Our operations are home to unique animals, plants and wildlife, so it is important that we protect this biodiversity. The first mission is to mitigate impacts as we operate, and then we rehabilitate these sites to protect and restore local ecosystems so they can thrive long term.

–        Climate – Climate change is an increasing concern around the world, and we are proud to offer products like catalysts for power plants and diesel trucks that leverage properties of TiO₂ to reduce air pollution. Our energy efficiency improvements are also aimed at reducing our GHG emissions, and we minimize use of high-carbon content energy sources where possible.

–        Waste – While we strive to maximize the use of resources, our processes do generate waste. Tronox manages waste according to applicable regulations based on the principles of cradle-to-gate, meaning we take accountability from extracting that resource from the ground until it leaves our factory for the customer. For waste that remains on site, we actively monitor and report on its safe disposal, containment and management to protect the environment, our communities and employees.

Simply put, it is about the way we do business and the example we set – doing the right work the right way –  and includes our accountability to become a more efficient business that creates long-term value for our stakeholders and preserves our planet.
