EMPANGENI, South Africa, February. 06, 2014 Tronox Limited (NYSE: TROX) announced today that the South African Department of Water Affairs (DWA) has lifted the suspension on the company’s main water use license for its KZN Sands Fairbreeze Mine in Mtunzini, KwaZulu-Natal.
“In September 2013, Tronox was granted its main water use license for construction and operation of its Fairbreeze Mine. In November 2013, a local conservancy appealed the water use license, which by law automatically suspended this permission. Tronox submitted a petition to the Minister in protest of the suspension, requesting that the suspension be uplifted, pending the outcome of the appeal.
In a letter dated 05 February 2014 from the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Tronox was granted its request after the Ministers thorough consideration of all parties submissions. Tronox is pleased with this outcome and will mobilise its project team to recommence construction.
The new mine will bring significant economic benefits to the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. The mine will preserve more than 1,000 permanent and contractor positions and generate an additional 1,000 indirect jobs. Tronox anticipates spending approximately ZAR530 million on services and products, more than half of which will go to black economic empowerment (BEE) companies. The development of infrastructure for Fairbreeze, such as a new electric power substation and water pipeline will also benefit the region. Post-mining rehabilitation of the site will support tourism, land preserves for ecological research and agriculture.
